The Gakuya
Gakuya is a cross between the dressing room and green room in Japanese theatre language. In the world of Rakugo, there is only one Gakuya per theatre - meaning the most senior Masters, even a Living National Treasure, shares the dressing room with the very newest of apprentices. It is here that artists gather to re-unite, talk about performance, make schedules to perform with each other in the future, and generally laugh their heads off before, during and after the show. It is here that apprentices come to hone their craft and learn from great Masters.
And it is here that the supporters, fans and sponsors, who are essential members of the Rakugo family, come to greet their favorite storytellers, bring gifts of food and other treats (cash is included in the category of treats lol), and also receive gifts of original fans and hand towels from the performers in return.
In essence, the Gakuya is all about community, communication, and artistic family.
That is what we are creating here on a worldwide scale, with Katsura Sunshine's Gakuya.
